The past week I have had the opportunity to enjoy some time in Fiji. Along with presenting at a conference I had time to take in the Oh So relaxed atmosphere of the Fijian lifestyle. The people are so friendly, they are chilled out and totally in the moment.
The thing that really struck me was the way in which the local Fijian folk addressed all of those people who crossed their path. Wherever you go you are welcomed with a huge smile and the words Bula or Bula Vinaka. Riding in the local bus is a great experience of Fijian culture. The bus has no windows and stops for anyone whether they are at a bus stop or not and of course pets and animals are welcome. The remarkable part of this is that people from kids to policemen on the side of the road would yell out Bula and wave as we passed.
So what does Bula Vinaka mean? The dictionary definition is “Wishing you happiness and good health”. What a lovely affirmation to cast upon every person you meet. This energy is that of Quadrant 3. That part which is supportive and inclusive of all those around. It is the energy of the healer part of us that is connected to the gut and sensitive to the feeling of others.
The interesting part about this is that there is solid science that supports the notion that happiness has a profound effect upon good health. I took the time to have a look at some of the research that links happiness and health and found a whole string of studies including the following:
- Happiness Strengthens the Immune System
- Happiness Combats Stress
- Happiness Combats Disability
- Happiness Combats Disease including breast cancer
- Happiness Lengthens Life
- Happiness Protects the Heart
I don’t know what the health status of indigenous Fijians is but one thing is for sure is that they are very relaxed and they love children and children love them.
I think the happiness vibe has something to do with their Bula consciousness somehow.
